6th Form Curriculum Guide - Year 12 Music
Term 1Introductions and Vocal Music  
Students will start with an introduction to the course where they build on GCSE experience, consolidate musical vocabulary and knowledge, study exemplar performances and compositions and look at the assessment criteria for coursework. They will then move on to free composition inspirations and task setting (discussion of possible routes into free composition). The term will finish with an exploration of J.S. Bach 'Cantata, Ein feste Burg, BWV 80: Movements 1, 2 and 8' and Mozart 'The Magic Flute: Act 1 Nos. 4 and 5'. Preparation for the performance component will be ongoing.

Term 2Vocal Music, Free Composition, Performance (Vaughan Williams 'On Welock Edge: Nos. 1, 3 and 5')  
Students will listen widely to Baroque, Classical and Romantic choral music. This will include Schubert and Fanny Mendelssohn leider and extracts from operas by Verdi and Wagner. They will look at the relationship of the words and music and the use of musical elements, musical language and musical context. There will be coverage of the full chronological period from the 1600s to the 1900s which will include a range of structures and styles. Work on free composition will be ongoing. Preparation for the performance component will be ongoing.

Term 3Instrumental Music Vivaldi 'Concerto in D Minor, Op. 3 No. 11' Clara Schumann 'Piano Trio in G minor, op. 17: Movement 1' Berlioz 'Symphonie Fantastique: Movement 1'  
Students will explore the set pieces with a focus on understanding of musical elements, musical context and musical language in order to make critical judgements about the music. Comparative and evaluative skills will be practised. This area of study is diverse and will reflect Baroque and 19th Century approaches to instrumental music. Free composition is ongoing. Preparatory exercises are started towards composition to a brief assessing technique. Preparation for the performance element is ongoing.

Term 4Instrumental Music Music for Film; Bernard Herrman 'Psycho' excerpts, Rachel Portman 'The Duchess' excerpts  
The set pieces will be explored by using the students' knowledge and understanding of musical elements, musical contexts and musical language to make critical judgements about the music. Comparative and evaluative skills will be practised. Study will reflect varied approaches to creating mood and atmosphere. Term 5Music for Film: Danny Elfman 'Batman Returns' excerpts  
Students will listen to music across a range of film styles with particular focus on the set piece of music. Free composition is ongoing. Preparatory exercises are continued towards composition to a brief assessing technique. Preparation for the performance component is ongoing.

Term 6Popular Music and Jazz The Beatles: selected songs from 'Revolver' Courtney Pine: selected songs from 'Back in the Day' Kate Bush: selected songs from 'Hounds of Love'  
Students will explore the set pieces using knowledge and understanding of musical elements, musical contexts and musical language. They will make critical judgements about music and compare and evaluative pieces of music. Free composition is ongoing.
