KS4 Curriculum Guide - Year 10 English
Term 119th Century Fiction and Creative Writing  
Students study a range of 19th Century fiction extracts, practising analysis and evaluation skills, before studying creative writing techniques.

Term 2Modern Novel: Lord of the Flies   
Introduction to the course, enthusing students about English. Introduction to Literature – what makes a text “literary”? Begin novel (Lord of the Flies) or play (An Inspector Calls) with a focus on understanding plot and symbolism, the presentation of characters, themes and the context in which it was written. Also practise responding to unseen passages for creative exploration of writer’s style.
Assessment: R: Lit P1, Sec B Theme or character essay W: Lang P2, Sec B Write a news article about the youth culture.Key Words and Terms
 
Term 3Macbeth
To introduce Shakespeare play – Macbeth - with a focus on understanding plot and dramatic structure, the presentation of characters, themes, and the context in which it was written. Continuation of non-fiction study built in to class/home work.
Assessment: R: Lit P1, Sec A Seen extract from the play to analyse how the character is presented. W: Lang P2, Sec B Write a diary entry from the POV of the character in the extract. S&L: Independent presentation on a topic Key Words and Terms
 
Term 4Macbeth
Shakespeare play – Macbeth - with a focus on understanding plot and dramatic structure, the presentation of characters, themes, and the context in which it was written. Continuation of nonfiction study built in to class/home work
Assessment: R: Lit P1, Sec A: Thematic essay on Shakespeare text. W: Lang P2, Sec B Write a letter to the Education Secretary arguing for the preservation or removal of Shakespeare from the curriculum. Key Words and Terms
 
Term 5Non Fiction; speaking and listening.
Assessment: R: Lang P2, Sec A Comparative of 2 non-fiction texts- Q7. W: Lang P2, Sec B Write a speech persuading students to participate in a club or activity that you enjoy. S&L: Independent presentation on a topic of student’s choice.Key Words and Terms
 
Term 6Non-fiction texts. 19th Century fiction.
Preparation for end of year exam. Begin to research 19th Century text. Read and understand a range of modern poems from our Anthology
