KS4 Curriculum Guide - Year 10 Spanish
Term 1Asi soy yo!
This unit introduces students to the expectations of GCSE Spanish. Starting with the familiar topic of myself, my family and friends, students learn how to develop and extend their work at a more advanced level. Students will progress to discuss my home life and my local environment. In these they will focus on descriptions and opinions including stating advantages and disadvantages. They will study a range of grammatical structures including the present tense, reflexive verbs and the imperfect tense.

Term 6Las Vacaciones
Students finish Year 10 by beginning the topic of holidays. They will consider different methods of transport and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Students develop their existing vocabulary related to travel and will practise dealing with scenarios in airports and train stations. Grammatical aspects include development of tense usage and Spanish prepositions.

Terms 2/3Gente Joven
Students consider a range of topics relating to young people in society. They begin by discussing their hobbies and leisure activities in greater detail thank at Key Stage 3. There will be a focus of creating and understanding work in which more than one tense is used. This will lead to studying the topic 'the media and youth culture' in which students will consider the role of technology in today's society and develop their use of Spanish for 'real life' situations. Finally students will look at the topic of 'famous people' and will develop their descriptive skills. Towards the end of the unit, students will complete a mock writing controlled assessment which will be vital preparation for Year 11. Grammar aspects include developing grammatical accuracy and independence. They will focus on the present tense and irregular verbs; using the preterite tense and using comparatives and superlatives.

Terms 4/5El mundo de trabajo
This unit is split into three main sections; school, work experience and future plans. Students will begin by discussing their opinions about school. This will range from talking about lessons to uniform and rules. Then students will look at applying for jobs and constructing their CV in Spanish. Finally students will discuss their plans for the future, including what they want to do after school and further beyond. They will also be describing their ideal life and dreams. Throughout this unit there will, again, be a focus on using Spanish in ‘real life’ scenarios. At the end of this unit, students will complete their first formally assessed speaking controlled assessment. This unit provides students with the grammatical tools to achieve well at GCSE. There will be a focus on using the preterite and imperfect tenses together as well as using verbs in the future and conditional tense. Students will also practise and develop their skills with adjectival agreements.
