KS3 Curriculum Guide - Year 8 PSHCE
Term 1Healthy Relationships 
Students will consider the qualities and behaviours that they should expect and exhibit in a wide variety of positive relationships (including teams, class, friendships). They will explore what makes an unhealthy relationship and will think about the importance of trust, mutual respect and honesty. Students will consider domestic violence and abuse, including forced marriage. This unit also requires discussion of the media portrayal of relationships (including romantic relationships and friendships) which might include music videos, advertising and sexual images shared between young people and learn to recognise the unrealistic portrayal of relationships and sex in pornography.

Term 2Media  
In this unit students will develop their awareness of the media and the influence if has on their lives. Students will focus on the role of news organisations and the importance of freedom of the press. Students will also look at fake news and learn how to be more critical of some of the sources of information available to them.

Term 3Risks and Staying Safe   
In this unit students will learn to recognise peer pressure and strategies to manage it. They will learn to understand the feelings and pressure that the need for approval can generate including in relation to the purchase and use of tobacco and alcohol, drugs and other risky behaviours Then students will learn about the difference between friendship groups and gangs and strategies for managing pressure to join a particular group or gang. They will also learn about the law relating to the carrying of offensive weapons and about knife crime. Finally, students will consider the risks associated with gambling, why people might choose to gamble, and how the gambling industry influences their choices .

Term 4Drugs   
Students will consider what drugs are and the roles they play in society (including alcohol, the safe use of prescription drugs and over the counter medicines). They will consider illegal substances and the social effects of drugs; the risks and consequences of 'experimental' and 'occasional' substance misuse and the terms 'dependence' and 'addiction'. Students will look at the laws governing drug use and misuse and consequences for the use and supply of illegal drugs. Sub topics include; alcohol, smoking and vaping, cannabis, solvent abuse and New Psychoactive Substances.

Term 5Global Citizenship   
In this unit students will build upon their understanding of citizenship and their role as an active citizen within the wider context of the global community. Student will explore some of the main global issues including water scarcity, poverty, hunger and climate change. They will consider the causes and effects for each of these issues but also the actions that can be taken by various groups of people (children, adults and charities/organisations).

Term 6Well-being   
Students will look in greater depth at the 5 steps to well-being introduced in tutor programme. They will consider changes they can make to their own lives to feel more confident and live more happily.
