Design Technology Overview

Rotation A in D&T: Product Manufacture

Students will continue to develop their knowledge of materials by manufacturing a candle holder from a variety of metals. Students will apply their scientific knowledge to identify the physical and working properties of different metals and experiment with a range of different manufacturing techniques and processes including, scroll forming, annealing and riveting. Students will learn about the different scale of productions that are used commercially to manufacture products, along with the health and safety considerations that need to be assessed. Understanding the primary sources of metals will allow students to consider the environmental impact of our material choices.

Each unit has two key tasks that are assessed. Key task one is based on the student's designing and making skills; key task two is on the technical knowledge learnt through the unit and assessed through a mixture of questions including extended written tasks and maths based questions.

Rotation B in D&T: Textile Design and Manufacture

Students will manufacture a commercially viable jumper or hoodie using hand and machine sewing. They will learn about different scales of production and how mass produced items are manufactured. Students will learn to apply anthropometric data to adapt, plan and manufacture their product. The impact of the textile industry will be taught through an in depth study on fast fashion and sustainability. Students will be asked to consider ways they can reduce their textile carbon footprint.

Rotation C in D&T: Graphic and Engineering Design

Students will complete short projects that allow them to explore sustainable materials, use a range of construction techniques and to experiment with electrical circuits. Students will widen their knowledge of the world of design through learning about different designers and design movements and their historical importance. Iconic designers will be used as stimuli to design and model a chair that incorporates structural techniques such as triangulation. Students will experiment with 'Little Bits' to create different electronic systems and engineered products. Their final projects will be to design and make a sustainable lampshade using skills and knowledge gained throughout KS3. Students will create an individual design by using their chosen media and techniques.

Rotation D in D&T: Food Preparation & Nutrition

Students will develop higher cooking skills through a series of practical cooking challenges. They will learn about different methods of heat transfer, fair trade and organic ingredients. Students will complete an in depth investigation on eggs and pastry by cooking quiche, Yorkshire puddings and cheese twists. They will complete the unit by planning and making a family dish of a cottage pie and creating a meal planner including all the dishes they have made.
