Design Technology — Year 7

Design Technology Overview

Rotation A in D&T: Product Manufacture

Students will make a timber product inspired by Banksy and USB nightlight using CAD CAM. They will study systems, simple circuits & energy storage, along with material properties and their origins. Students will learn how to use power tools such as the belt sander, scroll saw and cordless drill. A variety of hand tools will be used and students will consider health and safety rules and assessments.

Each unit has two key tasks that are assessed. Key task one is based on the student's designing and making skills; key task two is on the technical knowledge learnt through the unit and assessed through a mixture of questions including extended written tasks and maths based questions.

Rotation B in D&T: Textiles Design and Manufacture

Students will produce a product reflecting the work of Claus Oldenburg, acquiring the knowledge of artists and how to use this to inform design decisions.

Students will be introduced to hand and machine sewing, and with the confidence built in this area, they will use the techniques to create a final product; a cushion inspired by their favourite food wrapper. Through the module students will gain knowledge of materials, and their properties, textile equipment and its uses, as well as how to build a workable design specification. On completing their cushion, pupils will develop their graphical knowledge to design and make packaging, suitable for a retail environment. Students will gain a full understanding of health and safety when using all equipment including irons.

Each unit has two key tasks that are assessed. Key task one is based on the student's designing and making skills; key task two is on the technical knowledge learnt through the unit and assessed through a mixture of questions including extended written tasks and maths based questions.

Rotation C in D&T: Graphic and Engineering design

Students will learn different design strategies to help redesign an everyday product. They will analyse and design cutlery based on needs of people with limited dexterity and vision. Students will use a range of prototyping material to create 3D models of their ideas. They will learn to use technical drawing such as oblique and isometric to communicate their designs in greater detail. At the end of the project students will 'pitch' their new design through a verbal and visual presentation.

Each unit has two key tasks that are assessed. Key task one is based on the student's designing and making skills; key task two is on the technical knowledge learnt through the unit and assessed through a mixture of questions including extended written tasks and maths based questions.

Rotation D in D&T: Food Preparation and Nutrition

Students develop their knowledge of the Eatwell Guide and health and safety while handling food. Students will complete a range of practical tasks to cover cooking skills and techniques. Students will learn the theory of enzymic browning and gluten and apply their knowledge to create a food hypothesis and complete research.

Each unit has two key tasks that are assessed. Key task one is based on the student's food hygiene and practical work; key task two is on the technical knowledge learnt through the unit and assessed through a mixture of questions including extended written tasks and maths based questions.
