History Overview

Term 1: An Introduction to History

In this unit, students are introduced to the key skills they will be expected to develop over the course of KS3. They will focus on chronology, interpretations and the use of historical sources. They will explore their own family histories through an extended learning project on 'Who do you think you are?'

Term 2: The Norman Conquest

This unit explores the events of 1066, the reasons for William’s victory at the Battle of Hastings and the subsequent impact of the Norman conquest. The unit covers core concepts such as causes and consequence and change and continuity.

Term 3: Why was religion so important in the Middle Ages?

This unit consider the importance of medieval religion to those living in this period. Students analyse the beliefs of the medieval Catholic Church and the power of the institution. Students also consider wider issues such as the Crusades and the Islamic Empire of the Middle Ages

Term 4: What was life like in Medieval England?

Students will investigate various aspects of life in the Middle Ages such as fun, crime, punishment and work. The unit explores concepts such as source analysis and change and continuity and includes an analysis of the significance of the Black death and the Peasants revolt

Term 5: How powerful were medieval monarchs?

Students examine the power of medieval monarchs through a series of case studies such as Henry II and John.

Student will be able to evaluate the limitations to the power of medieval monarchs in relation to the Church and the nobility, and will consider what made an effective medieval monarch.

Term 6: What was the significance of the Renaissance?

This unit concludes the Middle Ages by considering issues such as migration, the impact of the Renaissance and the beginnings of colonial conquests in the new world by European powers such as the Spanish conquistadors defeat of the Aztecs.
