Music Overview

Term 1: Introductions and Music Theory

Students will start with an introduction to the course where they build on GCSE experience, consolidate musical vocabulary and knowledge, study exemplar performances and compositions and look at the assessment criteria for coursework. They will then move on to free composition inspirations and task setting (discussion of possible routes into free composition). The term will include dedicated theory catch up for students depending on prior knowledge.

Preparation for the performance component will be ongoing.

Students will develop their understanding of how musical components and musicians work together. They will also need to understand context.

Term 2: Music history - into the classical era

Students will listen widely to Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical era music, with a particular focus on instrumental forms. They will track the development of the symphony through these eras, and then focus on wider listening around symphonies into the late classical era. This will lead to study of their set work, Haydn's symphony 104.

Work on free composition will be ongoing.

Preparation for the performance component will be ongoing.

There will be coverage of the full chronological period from the 1600s to the 1900s which will include a range of structures and styles.

Term 3: Development of the symphony

Students will study Haydn's symphony 104 and Mendelssohn's Italian symphony as set works for their exam. They will also study comparison symphonies from the era.

Preparatory exercises are started towards composition to a brief assessing technique.

Preparation for the performance element is ongoing.

This area of study is diverse and will reflect Baroque and 19th Century approaches to instrumental music. Students will need to understand history and context and how one stye moved to another.

Term 4: Begin study of free choice unit

Students will conclude their study of the WCT set works, and begin studying their genre of choice (either jazz, rock and pop, or musical theatre). This will involve learning the history of the genre and studying a wide variety of pieces, as well as trying exam questions.

Term 5: Continue study of chosen unit

Students will continue their study of their chosen genre (jazz, pop and rock or musical theatre) through wider listening and exam questions.

Preparatory exercises are continued towards composition to a brief assessing technique. The final composition is submitted, and a free composition is started.

Preparation for the performance component is ongoing.

Term 6: Conclude free choice unit and the development of the symphony

Students will conclude their free choice unit (jazz, pop and rock or musical theatre), as well as revising and concluding their work on the development of the symphony.

Students will finish and submit a free composition.

Preparation for the performance element is ongoing.
