Religion & Philosophy Overview

Term 1: (Short Course) Relationships and Families 2. (Full Course) Christian Practices.

Short Course: Students will consider issues surrounding families, marriage, divorce sexual relationships and gender equality. They will look at the nature of families including the role of parents and children, extended families and the nuclear family. The purpose of families will also be studied and within this topic; procreation, stability and the protection of children, educating children in a faith, contemporary family issues including same sex parents, polygamy, the roles of men and women, gender equality, gender prejudice and discrimination.

Full Course: Prayer, Baptism, Pilgrimage, Mission, Evangelism, Responding to Persecution, the Worldwide Church.

Term 2: (Short Course) Religion, Peace and Conflict. (Full Course) Christian Practices.

In the final unit of our Short Course GCSE, students will consider violence, weapons of mass destruction and pacifism in this unit. They will look at religion, violence, terrorism and war and think about the meaning and significance of peace, justice, forgiveness, reconciliation, violence (including violent protest), terrorism, reasons for war including greed, self defence and retaliation, the just war theory including criteria for a just war, a Holy war and pacifism.

Term 3: (Short Course) Revision (Full Course) Islamic Practices

Students will complete the content for the Short Course GCSE and begin revision this term.

Full Course students will begin Muslim Practices: The Five Pillars, Jihad, Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Adha, Ashura.

Term 4: (Short course) Revision (Full Course) Islamic Practices 1

Full course GCSE students will complete the final unit of the religious beliefs and practices exam paper content this term. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the five pillars of Islam, jihad, and Islamic festivals.

Short Course students will be revising for their exam next term.

Term 5: (Sort Course) Revision and exam (Full Course) Religion, Crime and Punishment

The Short Course GCSE examination will take place this term and so students will prepare for that in their lessons.

Full Course students will begin the study of Theme E, Religion, Crime and Punishment. They will also revise for their mock examinations.

Term 6: (Short Course) Anti-Racist RE (Full Course) Revision/mock examination

Following the Short Course GCSE examination in term 5, students in this term will turn to a pressing issue in modern day Britain, and Bristol specifically. They will consider whether or not Jesus would have torn down the Colston statue, and they will look at figures suck as Martin Luther King Jr and Stormzy to take an anti-racist approach to RE, before considering how they can express their own visions for justice and equality.
